First Steps

First steps,
To last steps,
No singing in between.
First words,
To last words,
Be there but not be seen.
Be a lady,
Be unique,
Be the woman,
But don’t you speak,
Be a mother,
A housewife to,
Have success,
Be very quiet,
Never overdress.
Stand up,
Be bright,
Be polite,
But not contrite.
Be a lady,
I was told,
Too late for that,
I’m getting old.
I’m off to do,
The world in shame,
Not like the others,
I’ve never been the same.
Last steps,
From first steps,
Lots of singing in between.
I’ve always been dramatic,
I’ve always owned the scene.
